Monumental 18th Century Primitive Portuguese Bench in Chestnut

A rare, heart-stopping piece of furniture!
A remarkable chestnut bench from the Montalegre region of Portugal - one of the best pieces I’ve been lucky enough to find.
Late 18th century
An extraordinary primitive bench, hewn from solid chestnut - it has all the raw honesty of true rural craftsmanship.
The timber is deeply grained, gnarled and time-softened — every board heavily patinated. The colour is exceptional - a rich, burnished dark, weathered chestnut - layered with depth and warmth.
Heavy plank construction - the boards are thick and weighty with a beautiful grain. The interior is as honest as the exterior. Hand-cut joints and pegs, visible historic marks , gnarled knots , all signs of a great life.
The edges are worn smooth , the grain across the backboards undulates , even the small scars, historic marks and gnarled knots are beautiful.
A high back with broad arms - generous storage within.
We plan to add old saddle leather hinges for the lift up lid.
An elemental piece of furniture - benches of this scale and integrity do not come along often, particularly with such untouched surface and presence.
