Long Alpine Folk Art Coffer with Detailed Carving

A long primitive coffer, probably from the Italian Alps, with six-petalled rosettes, concentric arcs and geometric borders carved across the front and lid. Small irregularities in the hand-worked patterns give it an individual folk charm. A branching motif divides the lower front, while the rosettes recall Alpine traditions of solar symbolism and household protection.
Broad planks fit between substantial upright legs, with shaped end pieces carrying the lid on wooden pivots. The timber, probably beech, has distinctive brown flecking and a pale, dry surface. It has the most lovely colour, old marks and softened edges , all signs of a long life in a rural home.
