Late 18th Century Spanish Folk Art Cupboard

A small hand-carved cupboard from the Pyrenean region of Northern Spain, heavily decorated with traditional solar rosettes and simple geometric borders.
The six-petalled motifs, enclosed within compass-drawn circles, were symbols of protection for those living within the home and of continuity through the seasons and generations. Deeply incised and entirely hand-worked, the carving brings quiet texture and movement to the façade.
Crafted in local hardwood, likely poplar or birch, the timber has mellowed to an earthen tone with age. Its form is primitive and architectural — square legs, plank top, wooden turn-button closures and a single internal shelf.
Humble in origin, this is a soulful piece of vernacular furniture with a strong presence.
