Late 18th Century Iberian Single Plank Chestnut Folding Trestle Table

A rare Iberian folding trestle table , dating from the late 18th century.
What makes this piece exceptional is the top — formed from a single, wide plank of solid chestnut. Boards of this scale are increasingly scarce, the uninterrupted surface is beautiful.
The chestnut has an extraordinary depth of dry colour , burnished tobacco with smoky caramel undertones. Centuries of use have matured it to perfection — old nail holes, gentle undulation, softened edges and a surface rich layered patina. Honest and entirely authentic.
The folding base is both practical and sculptural. Pegged mortice-and-tenon joints and hand-forged iron X-form stretchers provide strength , still strong and sturdy.
The base timbers, likely oak, give it a density and a slightly darker contrast to the warmth of the chestnut top — a traditional pairing in rural northern Spain and Portugal.
Designed originally as a working table — easily stored when not required. Simple and elegant, beautifully proportioned -it works as a desk, console, dining table or studio piece.
A soulful antique that transcends trend.
