Large West Country Windsor Armchair with Traces of Original Green Paint

An exceptional early 19th-century Windsor armchair of generous proportions, with a tall spindle back, sweeping arms and broad, saddle-shaped seat.
The chair-maker’s skill is shown in the slender bowed back, curved arm supports and finely balanced stance. Simply turned legs are joined by a crinoline stretcher, echoing the curves above.
Early green paint and brown scumble survive across the chair, worn through to warm timber along the arms, bow and seat. These layered surfaces, softened by hundreds of years are what makes this chair for me.
A substantial country chair with an unusually light, sculptural outline.
