Italian Walnut Cupboard 17th Century

A Northern Italian walnut cupboard dated late 17th to early 18th century. In remarkable original condition.
The strong architectural framing, deeply stepped mouldings and intricately carved cornice are typical of Baroque vernacular. The striking lion masks are a classical motif, often used in Italian cabinetry of the period, symbolising strength and guardianship.
The walnut has matured to a beautiful rich honey-brown tone, with an honest, natural patina developed over centuries.
The internal solid shelves are all fixed - the iron hardware, including the key and lock are all original - just as it should be.
Please also take a look at the image of the back (which I love), showing the superb wide-plank backboards, the raw textured surface and early hand-sawn marks , a wonderful contrast to the elegant front.
A beautifully scaled piece, mid-height - practical for so many rooms.
