French Alpine Vernacular Elm Drop-Leaf Table, Savoie, Late 19th Century

An honest little mountain table from the Savoie region of France, dating to the late 19th century.
Made in elm, the timber has taken on a warm, mellow tone, the grain softened over time. The edges are rounded, the colour deepened.
Its simple drop-leaf mechanism is primitive but clever, hand-fashioned and entirely practical. The leaves lift easily and are supported by straightforward wooden arms — no embellishment, just good sense.
An arched stretcher beneath the top gives subtle shape and strength, keeping the form grounded and steady.
Modest in scale, adaptable, unpretentious and very pretty - it would once have served daily life in a mountain farmhouse. Today, it sits just as comfortably beside a chair with a lamp, or quietly alone in a considered space.
As you can see , it completely folds away.
