An English box settle of c.1760 with a broad, framed plank back, gently shaped arms and an unusual mix of walnut, oak and fruitwood. The timbers give it a range of colour, from the deep reddish brown of the back to the lighter, golden brown of the worn arm tops. Old graffiti cut into the arms is still visible beneath the patina.

The centre board of the seat lifts on its original hand-forged iron hinges to reveal the storage below. A recessed finger pull beneath the front edge has been worn smooth by generations of hands. That small detail, alongside the old markings on the arms, gives this settle much of its character.
