An Exceptional Heavy Oak Country Farmhouse Table from France - 19th Century

A magnificent, heavily constructed country farmhouse table of exceptional character and substance. I was lucky to find this piece of furniture.

A rare survivor of country life, with every reason to serve another generation or two. An outstanding farmhouse or kitchen table, and a real head-turner. The broad, thick-planked oak top has a beautiful surface, worn and weathered through generations of use. Its natural colour ranges from pale, silvery grey, sun-washed oak to deeper golden brown, with darkened grain, knots, old marks and areas worn almost smooth. An extraordinary surface that could never be reproduced.

The historic repairs are remarkable. Hand-worked iron staples, carefully fitted timber inserts and old reinforcements show the lengths taken to preserve this table. Each repair has been made with purpose and skill, all addining up to a work of art.

There is so much I love about this table - made without compromise, built for hard daily use and repaired rather than replaced. Its great weight, generous proportions and honest construction give it great presence in a room.
