Exceptional French Alpine Chestnut Dining Table with Pair of Primitve Oak Benches, c.1850

A fabulous long French mountain table, from the Savoie region, dating to the mid-19th century.

Made in chestnut, the table has an extraordinary depth of colour and patina, as rich as an old dark brown leather saddle. Deep chestnut, tobacco and almost black tones have developed naturally across the surface through generations of use, with beautifully worn edges and the marks of its long working life.

At 234cm long, it has wonderful scale and beautifully simple construction. The long plank top sits above straight legs joined by stretchers, with a central drawer to the front and an unusually long drawer opening from one end. Both have substantial old iron ring pulls. The table is in extraordinary condition for its age and stands beautifully.

Sold with a pair of very special old oak benches. Their thick, naturally curved tops follow the original form of the timber, with gnarled edges, knots, old marks and superb colour and patina. Sturdy and strong, their more primitive character is a wonderful contrast to the rich, dark chestnut of the table.

A remarkable set with scale, simplicity and exceptional natural surfaces — immensely practical for a large kitchen or dining room.
