Exceptional Catalan Chestnut Work Table with Original Foot Rests, c.1800

Pieces like this are now so hard to find, a rare Catalan farmhouse work table.

Crafted in Catalonia around 1800, this exceptional chestnut work table has everything - outstanding colour, an entirely unotuched surface and beautiful vernacular construction.

The generous plank top, cut from mature Spanish chestnut, has mellowed to a rich honey-brown with subtle golden undertones. The timber displays wonderful movement, scattered knots and naturally formed grain, while centuries of use have left a beautifully soft, almost polished surface that could never be reproduced.

The base is equally impressive. Thick chamfered legs stand with a gentle outward splay, strengthened by diagonal braces and joined by substantial stretchers. The long lower rails serve as structural braces and practical foot rests, allowing craftsmen to work comfortably for extended periods. This thoughtful construction gives the table a relaxed architectural quality and remarkable stability.

Unlike many surviving examples, there is no unnecessary heaviness to the design. Instead, it has a confidence, with refined proportions that allow the generous top to appear almost to float above the frame.

Today it works as a kitchen preparation table, studio workbench, large centre table or console.
