English Six-Plank Oak Coffer, Circa 1700

A particularly good English six-plank oak coffer, circa 1700, of beautifully simple construction with exceptional colour and surface.

Constructed from six substantial oak boards, the end planks extend down to form the feet, deeply cut with a simple V-shaped opening. Fine moulded edges add a degree of refinement to an otherwise wonderfully restrained piece.

The oak has mellowed over more than three centuries to a rich chestnut and tobacco brown, with beautifully softened edges, old marks and wear. The broad boards are particularly impressive, with wonderful natural figuring to the timber.

The coffer retains its early wrought-iron strap hinges, together with the substantial lock plate and shaped hinged hasp to the front. The dark, aged iron sits beautifully against the warmth of the old oak.

A strong example of early English vernacular furniture, where simplicity, quality of timber and an exceptional untouched surface are what make it special.
