English Oak Armchair with Cjoiserie Decoration, Circa 1820-1840

An elegant English oak armchair dating from the first half of the 19th century, retaining its original chinoiserie-inspired painted decoration to the shaped rail beneath the back.
The chair stands on elegant cabriole front legs with swept rear legs and has particularly strong proportions, combining a light, refined frame with the warmth and character of country house furniture. The black painted rail is decorated with gilt detailing and a basket of fruit motif, reflecting the influence of Georgian japanning and chinoiserie decoration.
We have recently upholstered the chair in a fresh pink and cream striped linen, finished with a decorative woven braid trim that complements the upholstery and the mellow honey colour of the oak.
A comfortable and attractive chair that stands well, with good colour, pretty decorative detail and an understated elegance that allows it to work in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
