English Country House Cupboard with a Coffer Base in Warm Yellow Paint c.1800

A substantial English country house cupboard dating from around 1800.

Constructed in pine, this unusual piece combines a deep coffer-style base with two drawers below and a generously proportioned shelved cupboard above, creating an exceptional amount of storage within a relatively compact footprint.

Originally intended for household storage, pieces of this form were often used for linens, household textiles, tableware and other domestic necessities. The combination of enclosed cupboard space, deep lower storage and drawers makes it a very practical piece of furniture.

The cupboard is built with raised-and-fielded panels throughout and retains its original iron hinges and handles. Its straightforward construction and generous proportions are characteristic of good English country house furniture of the period.

We’ve recently painted it in a warm buttery yellow, a colour that suits the piece beautifully. The finish brings a freshness and lightness while allowing the texture and age of the timber to remain evident beneath the paint.
