Early English Ash Turner's Chair - Ebonised Ash, Northern England c.1820-1840

A beautiful early English turner’s chair in ash, probably originating from Yorkshire or Lancashire and dating to around 1820–1840.

Made by a country turner working at a pole lathe, the chair is a wonderful example of authentic vernacular design. The rhythmic bobbin turning to the back and uprights shows superb craftsmanship, the proportions are both sturdy and elegant.

Originally ebonised, the finish has mellowed beautifully with time and use, the dark surface gently worn to reveal the warm tone and grain of the ash beneath — a patina that only two centuries of handling can create.

The chair remains in wonderful honest condition, with a small period repair to one arm and a later rush seat, likely replaced around a century ago.

It has many of the qualities I am always drawn to in early furniture — beautiful design, honesty of construction, craftsmanship and soul.
