Early 19th-Century West Country Ash Windsor Armchair

An exceptional early Windsor armchair in ash, from the West Country. The tall hoop back and slender spindles rise above a broad, gently hollowed seat, enclosed by a continuous arm bow with neatly shaped ends.
The chair-maker’s skill is shown in the bent ash bows, carefully angled spindle joints and balanced splay of the legs. Simple ring turning distinguishes the front legs, joined by an H-stretcher.
The timber has developed a deep, beautiful golden-brown colour, darker around the joints, with small traces of green paint. Pronounced grain, exposed wedged joints and edges softened by long use give the generous seat particular interest.
