A Rare 19th-Century Mixed Timber Stick Armchair

A rare and exceptional 19th-century country armchair, whose character has evolved through generations of use, adaptation and repair.
A broad sycamore seat and ash back are paired with mismatched arms, one oak and the other sycamore. Their differing profiles, together with the shaped crest rail, slender sticks and widely splayed legs, give the chair a wonderful sculptural outline.
Clever repairs and replacement parts tell of a chair valued and kept in use. Rich colour, traces of old paint and surfaces worn smooth by handling bring these all of these elements together.
It stands strong and sturdy, a remarkable survivor of rural domestic life.
One of my favourite finds..a thing of such beauty and soul.
