An Exceptional Pair of Ash Macclesfield Country Armchairs , Early 19th Century

An exceptional pair of early 19th-century English country armchairs, attributed to the Macclesfield chairmaking tradition of Cheshire.
The quality of craftsmanship is outstanding, from the beautifully shaped ash arms and precisely executed turnings to the distinctive rounded hoof-form feet. Their strong, balanced proportions and assured construction demonstrate the skill and sophistication of the finest regional vernacular chairmakers.
Remarkably preserved - the richly patinated surfaces have developed a depth of colour over generations, with the darkened frames contrasting against the warm, golden grain of the shaped arms. The wear is entirely sympathetic to their age, giving the chairs a superb, naturally developed surface.
An accomplished pair of English vernacular armchairs of exceptional quality and presence. Perfect examples of regional furniture-making and as sculptural pieces within a considered contemporary interior.
