An Exceptional Country Merchant's Table with Original Patina

A handsome country table in chestnut, from Northen Italy - late 18th century.
The substantial plank top has developed an extraordinary depth of colour, warm honey , rich tobacco to a darker walnut brown. The beautifully worn surface has the marks of generations of use, honest, old inset repairs and softened edges. The surface has a mellow, almost leathery quality, with a wonderful variation of colour and texture.
The table stands on four square tapering legs, joined by an unusual arrangement of shaped, intersecting cross-stretchers.
A central drawer, fitted with an internal division and a deep compartment beneath, suggests that this was probably once a merchant’s table, perhaps in a country inn or shop.
The craftsmanship is in the practical construction, carefully shaped stretchers and historic repairs. Particularly appealing are the old timber inserts to the top, left visible as part of the table’s long history.
A remarkable piece of vernacular furniture, with an exceptional untouched-looking surface, beautiful proportions and a strong, individual presence.
A wonderful hall table with a large lamp, or a small country kitchen table with a useful deep drawer.
