A Rare English Low Hearth Windsor Armchair, c.1780-1820

A rare English low hearth Windsor armchair, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century and remarkable for its unusual construction and extraordinary proportions.

Set low to the ground, the broad pine seat is surrounded by a finely worked ash frame. Most distinctive is the elongated bow back, which continues down through the arm structure towards the seat, creating an unusual continuous framework and giving the chair its unmistakable silhouette.

Probably originating in Yorkshire or the North Midlands, the chair appears to be the work of an accomplished regional chairmaker adapting the Windsor tradition to create low fireside seating. The combination of its deep, low stance, broad seat and tall sweeping bow is particularly rare.

The ash has developed a wonderfully mellow colour and natural wear from generations of use, complementing the simplicity and strength of the construction.

A rare survivor of English vernacular chair-making, with exceptional proportions and a highly unusual bow-through-arm construction.
