A Late 18th Century Prep Table from Lombardy, Northern Italy

This piece of furniture earns the title of "a head turner."
A magnificent large late 18th century prep table from Lombardy, Northern Italy, constructed in solid poplar and chestnut.
Very generous scale - a good amount of practical storage with three drawers, each fitted with simple turned wooden knobs.
The stunning top is made from wide slabs of chestnut , the deep surface and edges have been worn smooth over time. The patina is absolutely beautiful — richly layered with tonal variation, natural markings and areas of deep wear from hundreds of years of daily use.
The strong , sturdy base is in poplar, which was often used in rural Italian furniture of this period. The base developed a deeper, more grounded tone, contrasting with the warmth of the top.
Originally made for kitchen use, it now sits effortlessly as a working table, a central island, or a long console within a considered interior.
A rare example of rural Italian vernacular furniture - preserved and in remarkable condition.
