A Fine Continental Sunburst Veneered Circular Table, c.1900

A very fine occasional walnut table, probably Northern Italian, dating from around 1900.
The outstanding feature is the beautifully worked sunburst top, composed of numerous narrow sections of carefully matched hardwood veneer radiating from a small central roundel. Fine circular stringing defines the design, with a broad crossbanded border providing a contrasting direction to the grain.
The quality of the cabinetmaking continues through the deep, circular frieze, with its vertically arranged veneers and carefully detailed panels above each leg. Four slender, tapering legs are similarly decorated with narrow veneered panels and terminate in small metal sabots.
The table has a wonderful, mellow golden-brown colour, with darker rich tones and considerable depth to the grain. The contrasting veneers and restrained decorative details show both the skill of the cabinetmaker and the care taken over the overall design.
A beautifully balanced and exceptionally well-crafted piece, combining the elegance of neoclassical furniture with the warmth and character of an antique surface.
Lovely proportions, perfect to sit beside a chair or sofa.
