19th Century Alpine Folk Art Chest with Naive Hand-Carved Detail

A remarkable late 19th century Alpine folk art chest, from the Italian mountain regions, extensively decorated with hand-carved geometric patterns and tree motifs.
The decoration covers almost every visible surface, with repeated diamonds, cross-hatching, zigzag borders and branching forms. These traditional folk art motifs are often associated with protection, fertility, growth and continuity, reflecting the beliefs and customs of rural mountain communities.
Constructed from substantial hardwood timber The chest has a simple, robust form with a plank lid, projecting end rails and a deep interior.
The colour are tones are deep and rich - almost cognac and honey. A beautiful and soulful piece with a sculptural presence.
The front has the date 1888 inscribed, placing it within the late 19th-century Alpine vernacular tradition.
An extraordinary example of rural craftsmanship, combining practical construction with an exceptional amount of decorative work. Its low proportions also make it perfect to be used as a coffee table with plenty of storage space.
All about the colour and charm - one of my favourite pieces.
