17th Century Italian Walnut Writing Table

A beautifully proportioned Italian writing table in walnut, dating to the late 17th or early 18th century.

Constructed in solid walnut - the timber has mellowed to a deep, glowing chestnut-brown with remarkable variation in tone. The top has worn smooth by centuries of use, with an extraordinary depth of colour and patina that shifts from honeyed amber to darker umber at the edges. The surface has soft undulations, small marks and historic wear, all signs of daily life , a piece of furniture that has been used and enjoyed.

The table stands on elegantly turned baluster legs, united by a shaped stretcher with a central finial. A single drawer has the original iron drop handle, with worn down marks of many years wear, which I think adds to the story.

The walnut throughout is dense and richly grained, with a warmth that is unmistakably Italian. The base shows attractive age-related surface texture and historic worm to the legs and rails, entirely natural given the age and origin - now long since inactive. Structurally sound and ready for use.
