Swedish Gustavian Light Powder Blue Painted Commode c.1780

A delicate Gustavian commode in original light powder blue-paint with Greco-Roman details including winged lions paw feet gilded in silver, and silver gilt Phoenix motifs on the sides of the drawers. The Gustavian furniture style was born in late 1700s in the reign of King Gustav of Sweden. In his youth he attended the court of Louis XVI in Versailles and learnt a passion for furniture. Bringing back the fashion of the French Court to Sweden lead to the Gustavian style, a character all of its own.
